कडवल्लूर् अन्योन्यम् - वेदस्पर्धा
प्रतिवर्षं केरले कडवल्लूर् श्रीरामस्वामिमन्दिरे एका
वैदिकस्पर्धा आयोजिता भवति । ८ दिनेभ्य प्रचलति एषा स्पर्धा यत्र केरलराज्यस्य
तृश्शूर् - तिरुनावाय मठयॊः सदस्याः ऋग्वेदपण्डिताः भागं गृह्णन्ति । एषः कार्यक्रमः
न केवलं भारते, अपि च
विश्वस्तरे अनन्यसदृशः इति श्रूयते । वेदप्रयोगपरिपोषणं
उद्दिश्य प्रचलिते अस्मिन् कार्यक्रमे द्वयोः मठयोः वेदपण्डिताः अष्टदिनेषु वेदप्रयोगे स्वस्व नैपुण्यं स्पर्धारुपेण दर्शयन्ति । मठसदस्याः
मिलित्वा द्वयोः गणयोर्मध्ये प्रयोगनैपुण्यं स्तरोन्नत्यं च निश्चिन्वन्ति ।
संहितापाठः, क्रमपाठः, जटा-रथापाठश्च स्पर्धाय़ां प्रयोगे अन्तर्भवन्ति । संहिता-पद-क्रमपाठप्रयोगानां “वारः” इति नम ।
वारप्रयोगः मन्दिरस्य सायाह्नपूजायाः पूर्वं भवति, जटा-रथा प्रयोगस्तु पूजानन्तरं
भोजनकाले च ।
प्रतिदिनं
ऋग्वेदस्य एकः मण्डलः स्पर्धाविषयो भवति । द्वयोः मठयोः एकैकः पण्डितः पर्यायक्रमेण
मण्डलस्य निर्दिष्टवर्गस्य १० मन्त्राणां संहितापाठः क्रमपाठश्च (“वारः”) करोति ।
१,३,५,७ दिनेषु प्रथमपर्यायः एकस्य मठसदस्यानां भवति, २,४,६,८ दिनेषू
अन्यमठसदस्य़ानां च । अस्मिन् वर्षे यस्य प्रथमपर्यायः प्रथमदिने भवति, अग्रिमवर्षे
प्रथमदिने प्रथमपर्यायः अन्यमठस्य भवति
। वारप्रयोगाय वर्गनिर्देशः (अध्यायः-वर्गः)
अन्यमठसदस्याः एव कुर्वन्ति । प्रयोगकाले स्वगणस्य द्वौ सदस्यौ केवलं हस्तमुद्रया प्रयोक्तुः
साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हतः । एवं वारद्वयं
समाप्य सर्वे अपि सदस्यौ मिलित्वा पुनः “वारम्” करोति यत्र एकस्य मठस्य पण्डितः वर्गं
हस्तमुद्रया निर्दिशति, अन्यमठपण्दितः तस्य प्रयोगस्य आरम्भं करोति ।
भोजनकाले
प्रथमपर्यायमठस्य द्वौ पण्डितौ जठा अथवा रथाप्रयोगं कुरुतः । अत्रापि प्रयोगाय
संहितावर्गनिर्देशः इतरमठसदस्यैरेव क्रियते । अस्मिन्
प्रयोगे अन्यौ द्वावपि स्वमठपण्डितौ तयोः समीपं उपविश्य साहाय्यं कर्तुं अर्हतः, किन्तु
परसाहाय्यं विना प्रयोगः एव नैपुण्योन्नत्यम् मन्यते।

Anyonyam - Competition in Veda chanting
A unique Rig Veda recital competition
is organised in Kadavallur Sri Ramaswamy temple, Trissur, Kerala in the
Malayalam month of Vrischika every year. The objective of this competition is
to provide encouragement of traditional vedic studies and developing expertise
in vedic chanting with pada-prakruti-vikruti-pathas. In the program spread over 8 days, vedic scholars
from two Rigveda Mutts of Kerala - Trissur & Tirunavaya participate and exhibit
their vedic expertise. Winner is jointly decided by experts from both Mutts
considering the overall superiority of participants from each group.
The competition is held in
recital of samhita along with Pada, Krama, Jata and Ratha. Of these Krama
belongs to the Prakrutipatha category while Jata and Ratha come under Vikruti
patha. Samshita recital with Pada and Krama patha is called Varam. The Varam
part of the competition is held before evening Puja in the temple while the
Jata, Ratha recital is taken up after the Puja during dinner. Each day, the
topic of competition is one Mandala of Rig Veda. In the initial Varam part,
participant from each Mutt in turn is required to recite 10 mantras from the
Chapter and Varga indicated by the opposite Mutt. Each Mutt gets the first Varam
turn on alternate days ie., Days 1,3,5 and 7 for one Mutt and days 2,4,6 and 8
for the other. The Mutt who gets the first turn on day 1 etc this year will get
the first turn on day 2 etc next year.
In the Varam recital, a
collegue of the same Mutt is allowed to extend assistance by hand gestures
(Hastamudra). The first Vara will be followed by the second Vara by a scholar
from the alernate Mutt.
During dinner, two scholars
from the Mutt which had the first Varam perform the Jata or Ratha recital. Here
again, the selection of Chapter and Varga for Jata is done by scholar from the
opposite Mutt. In this recital, two additional scholars belonging to the same
Mutt can sit beside the participant to provide assistance in recital. However,
correct recital without any help is considered superior and such experts are ranked much higher.
